It was built in honor of two Kazakh batyrs (warriors) – Karasai and Agyntai.

According to legends, Karasai possessed incredible strength and dexterity. Due to his impressive physique, he had his boots sewn from the skin of a large bull. The legends about Agyntai also speak of his incredible physical strength and courage. Both batyrs lived in the 17th century and defended their native land from the Dzungarian conquerors. They were inseparable for 48 years and participated in almost two thousand battles against the oppressors.

The mausoleum built over their tombs has become a symbol of friendship and unity of the peoples of Kazakhstan. Its walls are engraved with texts stating the heroic deeds of the batyrs. The mausoleum has two domes, each sixteen meters (52.5 ft) high, with a mosque between them. The entire memorial complex is oriented towards Mecca.

The mausoleum is open to visitors all year round.
