West Altai Nature Reserve

The reserve encompasses alpine meadows, taiga, tundra, and deciduous forests.

West Altai Nature Reserve, founded in 1992, is located to the east of the town of Ridder. Four altitudinal zones are distinguished here: deciduous forests, alpine meadows, taiga, and tundra. Each zone has its own species of plants. For example, pine and cedar forests belong to the taiga; birches, poplars, and cherries grow in the zone of deciduous forests. This area is also home for marals, elks, roes, golden eagles, falcons and black storks. In the West Altai Nature Reserve there are also cultural and historical monuments, which can be reached independently or with a tour. Reserve workers try to preserve its treasures, conduct interesting excursions and acquaint visitors with the nature of East Kazakhstan.
