Tamgaly-Tas tract, located on the banks of the Ili River, 120 km north of Almaty, is remarkable for its rock paintings. 5 images of Buddhist deities are carved on the rocks. Historians date them to the 12th century. Besides Buddhist paintings, there are tamgas (emblems) of all Kazakh clans.
