The concept of the modern triathlon originated in France in the beginning of the 20th century. The newspaper L’Auto reported on a competition called Les Trois Sports, which consisted of three sections: 3 km-long running distance, 12 km-long cycling race and swimming across the Marne Canal. All three sections were to be overcome without any breaks. Over time, the distance increased.
Swimming
Competitions begin with swimming. All participants start from the shore, pontoon or directly from the water (in a long-distance triathlon). In case of a low water temperature (according to the rules of the IRONMAN triathlon, usually not higher than 24.5°C), wetsuits up to 5 mm thick are allowed. Usually a swim goes along a triangular route, indicated by buoys and cables. For each arbitrary reduction in the length of the route, penalty points are awarded, and disqualification is possible. Athletes can use any swimming style they prefer. Most often it is a crawl.
Cycling race
After getting out of the water, the athletes change clothes in the transit zone, and then the cycling race begins. Catering stands are located along the route, but technical assistance is prohibited for professionals. The short-distance triathlon uses regular road racing bikes for group races. In the IRONMAN triathlon, athletes prefer different bikes.
Running
The main rule is that the athlete has to move on foot. The order of the sections is strictly regulated (swimming -> cycling race -> running). Athletes must not interfere with other athletes (while preparing their bikes or when changing clothes). They can only manually move bicycles within their designated area before and after arrival. The helmet must be put on before the start of the race and removed after the bike is mounted on a special ramp or designated place.
